They have appeared in various forms since ancient times. Today, they are still very popular and can be seen on many items from body art and jewelry to home décor. So what do they mean? Unfortunately, the earliest creators of the knots left precious little in the way of explanations as to their original significance. Over time, many interpretations have been inferred and assigned to them.

Also known as the mystic knot or endless knot, the esoteric meaning of the eternity knot reflects the permanent and endless nature of the soul. The pattern does not have a discernible beginning or end, and as such, reflects the ongoing process of life itself, serving as a reminder of the ceaseless cycles of birth and death.

In some lore, the knots are viewed as an infinite, unobstructed path and are worn as a “good luck” talisman or charm to draw stability and protect against setbacks or misfortune. Gifts with this symbol have historically been given with wishes for longevity and success in new endeavors.

Many ancient Celtic knots featured step and maze like patterns that were similar to those in ancient Egyptian and Aztec art. The step like patterns are thought to depict stages of development and progression in life, as well as a connection between the Earth and heavenly realms.

Celtic knots have several variations. Among the most popular is the Triquetra or trinity knot, which has different meanings in a variety of traditions. Pagan traditions view it as a representation of the Divine feminine Maiden, Mother and Crone. It is also said to represent the natural forces of Earth, Air and Water.

In Christian tradition, it is said to represent the holy trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In other Esoteric traditions, it is a representation of the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth.

Celtic knot symbols are versatile due to the subjective nature of their meaning. Anyone can appreciate their beauty and find special significance in them. They make a bold statement wherever they are used. From tapestries, to jewelry and other forms of art, Celtic knots are a fantastic way to bring a bit of history into your home or sacred space.

Celtic knots are one of the most beautiful, distinctive and recognizable types of art in the world.
