The \u201cevil eye\u201d is a widely recognized talisman used in many places to ward off evil and prevent curses.\u00a0 It is incorporated into jewelry, art, home d\u00e9cor and many other items, but why? What are it’s origins and how did it become so popular?<\/p>\n

As it turns out, the evil eye is a concept and symbol connected with many cultures.\u00a0 Each has slightly different translations, but the overall premise is the same.\u00a0 In Hebrew, it is known as \u201cthe eye of the envious\u201d, in Arabic and Punjabi it translates as \u201cbad eye\/look\u201d.\u00a0 In Portugese,\u00a0 mau-olhado<\/em> means \u201cgiving of an evil look\u201d and in Swedish, ge onda ogat<\/em> means \u201cto give an evil look\u201d in Hawaii maka pilau<\/em> means \u201crotten eyes\u201d.\u00a0 As you can see, numerous cultures have reference to the evil eye \u2013 but what is it exactly?<\/p>\n

Does it come from a demon? Is it a curse?<\/p>\n

The evil eye<\/a> is not about demonic spirits or things of that nature at all. In fact, it has more to do with warding off malicious energies directed at you from other people.\u00a0 In many ancient cultures, it was believed that this type of glare carried a curse with it that would bring misfortune, and perhaps even injury or death.\u00a0 As a result, symbols and talismans were used to ward off the evil eye, so that even if someone was given \u201cthe look\u201d; there would be no ramifications.<\/p>\n

Today, we may not believe that a dirty look will curse us; however it is possible to impacted by negativity from others.\u00a0 Have you ever spent time with a very angry or pessimistic person and later felt heavy or tired?
